Stunning renovation a winner

Regular gold winner Marty van der Burg Builders took home its first supreme award in 2020 for a stunning extension and renovation project in Flat Bush, Auckland. Boutique building fi rm Marty van der Burg Builders last entered House of the Year in the early 2000s, winning gold awards or category awards every time.

“We have a very high standard of work, but we never quite managed to get that supreme award,” Marty says. “I wasn’t surprised, but I was elated we won the supreme renovation award. I was particularly elated for my clients, because during the project there were many difficult decisions that needed to be made, and at the end those decisions were certainly justified given the results at completion.”

Marty was recommended for this project by the original builder of the house, which was built in 2003. He and Marty had known each other for about 20 years through their association with Registered Master Builders. When he first started on the job, Marty didn’t realise how involved it was going to be. “My initial brief was to extend the house by adding a gymnasium, with the potential of replacing existing roof tiles of the house to match the tiles for the gym.”

With the extent of work and roofing and cladding that was to be changed, the gymnasium addition and subsequent work soon turned into a significant renovation project involving a substantial number of experts. Among the challenges for the team were the curved roof flashings and junctions, which needed to be templated, constructed, and dry fitted on site, then taken away for powder coating and brought back to site once again for final fitting. Stage one and the first building consent was for the new 95sqm gymnasium, designed and built to fit seamlessly with a very specific style of construction.

The existing garage on the same level received the same Spanish terracotta roof tiles as the gym, and a new exterior cladding which will now withstand Auckland’s ranging weather conditions. A second consent was required for stage two of the project, which involved removal of the entire roofing system, replacement of both decks, and a re-clad of 90% of the house to improve future durability. All windows on the upper level were removed and replaced after replacing all the flashings.

A specialised tray roofing product from Architectural Metal Formers replaced a torchon membrane system on the lower roof, while the remainder of the roof is Spanish terracotta tile, replacing concrete tiles. All the roofing was backed up behind with extensive, custom made, stainless steel gutters. The project was completed with the Auckland Weather Tightness Team and its dedicated building inspector who was involved throughout the project. “It was an extensive job and a real team approach,” Marty says. “We went over everything with a fine-tooth comb. Every junction, every curve, everything was thought of.”
